Now that 2020 is behind you. Did it leave you feeling scattered,

overwhelmed and disorganized?

If so, you are not alone. Since the Pandemic home offices became the new norm and kitchen tables, the new classroom. The piles on your desk are roadblocks to productivity and can become distractions as you jump from one unfinished task to the other. Clutter can be a visual reminder of what was not accomplished and can grind you to a halt by giving you a sense of failure. There’s something freeing and peaceful when things are in their place. Order conveys a feeling of calm and stability—a feeling that things are under control and all is right with the world.

To get your control back, start simple by getting: 1) balance, 2) clarity

and 3) focus. Get started with the desk/kitchen table/workstation.

  1. Balance. Identify your priorities by identifying your deadlines and tackle those tasks first. Put away items/papers that you don’t need for the immediate task at hand. Once you have achieved your goal, then move on to 2) Clarity.
  2. Clarity.  Tackle the other piles on your workspace. By now, you have probably used this space as a “cath-all” for various items. If you have used this area to pile all your mail, or your recipes or even some holiday decorations, return the objects that don’t “belong” to their “homes.”
  3. Focus. Now that your work area has been de-cluttered, create your schedule for your new tasks, assignments and deadline-oriented projects. Keep your schedule visible to keep you on task. If you have a calendar, by simply adding these deadlines to the calendar, you will be able to plan realistically for getting these accomplished.

Start simple.

Decluttering one space at a time, makes it manageable and you will not get overwhelmed. The key is to achieve your control and your progress will incentivize you to do more. You Got This!
