Is one of your goals for the new year to downsize, declutter and get organized?
We all need to start somewhere, so how about we start in one of the busiest rooms in the house, the kitchen.
Almost all Americans start their mornings with their cup of coffee, tea, chocolate/cocoa, or some other type of drink. This means going into your cupboards and searching for your favorite mug or glass. This can be a frustrating task if you must go through yours and your family’s collection of glassware and mugs. We all have a favorite mug or glass. However, when every mug or glass we own is our favorite, it can be a hassle and overwhelming making room for all our favorites.
Often, we keep a variety of glassware and mugs, as if we are going to have over 20 people to join us for our morning beverage. It’s time to sort through all your glasses and cups and keep a minimum of 1-2 per person in the cabinet. It is not worth the shelf-space or your precious morning time to go through a sea of mugs and glassware. If you have the storage space, you can choose to keep other glassware or mugs in an overflow cabinet along with your extra entertainment supplies.
If you have an impressive mug collection and not enough storage or cabinet space, there are other creative ways to store and show it off. You can create a coffee station and hang your mugs on a wall or on peg boards. If done tastefully, you can create a mug art wall, save space, and have easy access to your collection.
Once you have sorted out your favorites, return the mugs, and glasses in an orderly fashion, creating columns for the different types: cocktail glasses/water glasses/ coffee mugs, etc… As for safely storing glassware, the best way to store glasses on a shelf is facing upward. Often the bottom is heavier and it’s best if the heaviest part is on the shelf. It also makes it easier to grab off the shelf and less likely the delicate glasses will chip.
If you find that your cabinets are not tall enough or big enough, you may want to consider space saving products. A coffee mug hanger can be a way to create more space in your cupboard. Also, delicate glassware can be safely stored with an in-cabinet rack.
Next look at the location. As a rule, the cabinet with your glasses and cups is the one located next to the sink or dishwasher or in some cases next to your coffee or tea supplies. You will save time in the kitchen when you have a flow for your process, whether it is when emptying out the dishwasher, or facilitating meal prep by keeping your spices in a drawer or in a cabinet close to where you cook.
Stay tuned for other organizing tips.
