Closets are an overwhelming part of the organization process for most.
Not only do we store our clothing, shoes, and accessories, but also store our memorabilia and whatever else doesn’t have a home. If we do not have a system in place for all this storage, we may end up with piles and have little space to get to the items we need, like clothing. However, you can create more space by using every inch of your closet. No matter what the closet size is, the organization process is the same.
Below is a step-by-step guide to start your closet organization.
-
- Start by removing all items from the closet. When you can see the shelving, walls, or the floor, you have a blank canvas.
- Next separate, and categorize all your belongings by type, i.e.: tops, bottoms, outerwear, dressier and casual clothing, sleeveless, etc.
- Go through each item and decide to keep it, donate it, or get rid of it. These decisions are based on your immediate ‘gut feeling’ when you see it. Do not overthink it. If you have not worn it or hope to fit into it later, it may be time to donate it. Do the same for your purses, accessories, and other miscellaneous items.
- Now you can start thinking about placement. Organize your clothing by keeping what you use the most at the front, and keep your pants, tops, and longer hanging items together. You can organize purses by using separators on top shelves or using hooks to hang them. Adding shelving or a dresser and using drawer separators or bin organizers can help you keep your dresser drawers tidy.
- Once you have placed your items where you want them, label your bins and tri-fold/file fold your items, or roll them inside the bins or inside drawers, so you can see it all at once without having to disrupt your order.
Using systems for closet placement gives you a quicker way to find what you need easier. The key is to maintain your systems and adjust what is not working. Closet organization is not all about aesthetics, it is about function. However, you will find that function is very pleasing to the eye! You’ll find what you need and put it away quicker and enjoy going to your closet instead of being embarrassed or overcome by it.
