Organizing Your Multi-Purpose Room
Get creative using the space you have. If you don’t have a room in your house for an office, a guest room or an exercise room. Why not create and organize your multi-purpose room?
The key to organizing your multi-purpose room is to first decide what function you want the room to serve. If you want your space to have an office and exercise room, keep your desk against a wall, so you can leave space open for the treadmill or exercise bike or a mat for your yoga stretches. If you want to use it as a guest room and an office you can use multipurpose furniture, such as ottomans– which can also be used for hidden storage– and a day bed, convertible sofa or murphy bed to multi task as a guest bed and a seating area. To make it cozier, if you can fit a small couch or reading chair, you can create a reading nook for yourself or a guest.
Use multipurpose storage such as a built-in or free-standing shelving or even floating shelving. By using floating shelving, you will have less furniture taking up floor space and you’ll create the illusion of a bigger room. You can use this attractive feature to showcase plants or pictures and use bins/baskets to store and hide your office papers, files, and supplies, keeping your desk a clutter-free zone. You can put your printer or computer accessories in the cabinetry behind closed doors or even on a bookcase or floating shelf.
Use Layers for Lighting
Consider adding layers of lighting when it comes to multipurpose rooms. Overhead lighting, lamps or even dimmers can be used based on how the room is being used at a specific time. If using the room as a gym, consider the size of equipment being used. Can the equipment be folded or tucked away, do you have storage for the yoga mats or dumbbells?
The Color Palette
Furniture and lighting can set the tone for the activities in the room. Picking a neutral wall color like gray, tan or white can be a safe bet for the multipurpose function, but don’t be afraid to experiment with a bit of color. Consider an accent wall for your desk area or behind your exercise equipment. A calming green can give you a Zen vibe for your yoga sessions, and a vibrant yellow for an energy boost when on the exercise bike. If you want to stay focused as you work in your room, you can try blues or greens.
Remember to involve others that will also be using the space for their opinions and input. This room is a canvas for you to be as creative and as resourceful as possible with the space that you are creating. Enjoy!
