Start Each Day with a Clean Slate
Do you find yourself beginning each morning by tackling yesterday’s unfinished chores—putting away clothes, washing dishes left in the sink, or taking out the previous day’s trash? Imagine how much better it would feel to start your day with everything in order.
The “Put the House to Bed” Method
The key is to “put the house to bed” every night. This means making it a daily habit to tidy up before you go to sleep. At the end of each day, gather any items that have been left around your living space into a “catch-all container.” Then, walk through your home and return each item to its proper place. Ideally, every item has a designated spot in each room.
How to Use the Catch-All Container
- Toys? Return them to your child’s room.
- Dirty clothes? Place them in the hamper.
- Shopping receipts? File them where you keep all your receipts.
- Unwrapped snacks? Take them to the kitchen.
- Dirty dishes? Wash them or load them into the dishwasher.
If you live in a larger home, keep the catch-all bin near the stairs so items can be easily returned to their upstairs locations at the end of the day. For apartments or smaller spaces, adapt this method to fit your layout.
Why This Matters
Putting things away each night keeps your home organized and prevents clutter from piling up. There’s nothing more frustrating than not having space to make breakfast or being unable to find your keys when you’re in a rush. By making everyone in your household responsible for their own belongings, you ensure that each new day begins smoothly.
