Does the thought of organizing your closet get you excited? If not, it’s time to

change your perspective on organizing.

Most of us see organizing as a chore, and an overwhelming, time-consuming process. What if you could change your perspective and enjoy the process? Below are 5 ways you can find inspiration and satisfaction in getting organized.

Pretend this is not your “stuff.”

What if you detached yourself from the emotion behind the items. Let’s face it, most of our personal belongings come with a story. You have kept the sweater your aunt knitted for 15 plus years in a box because you feel guilty getting rid of it. If you were helping your friend clean out their closet, wouldn’t you suggest to your friend that it’s time to donate the sweater?  Pretend this is not your sweater and go with your first instinct. Donate or Toss?

Involve the family in the process.

Involving the family in the decluttering process can reap its benefits. The job will get done faster, other members will help each other make decisions, and this is a great way of spending time together.

Make it fun.

Set a timer for your self or for the family or set a hard stop. Make it a contest as to who can do the most in the allotted time. Then give yourself or that member a reward.

Jam to your favorite music.

If you have a favorite tune while doing this work, time will go faster, and you will pick up your momentum. You may even find yourself humming, singing, or dancing as you fill up those donation bags. If you take the “work” out of the task, you will not overthink your decisions and you will get more done.

Invite a friend over to help.

If you have friends/family that you enjoy spending time with and can help you make decisions, you’ll have an easier time letting go and have less excuses to hold onto unused or unneeded things.

Remember that if you truly love an item or want to honor the person that gave it to you, you will want to see it displayed or stored where it’s easily accessible. Otherwise, it’s just another “thing” that gets put in a box and forgotten, taking up precious space and not allowing you to move forward to create new memories.
